And, ye fathers, provoke not

your children to wrath: but

bring them up in the nurture

and admonition of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:4

"Pops", "Pappy", "The Old Man"

and "Poppa", a few of the names I've had;

And others far less flattering, so to

simplify things call me "dad".

I'm the one with whom the buck stops,

when tough decisions are made;

Taxes are due, the wolf's at the door,

that ole' piper must be paid.

Sometimes I feel so inadequate,

the strong face in the mirror a sham;

feel overwhelmed by life's challenges,

Who I should be versus who I am.

Am I setting a good example,

As patient as I should be;

Am I providing the very best,

for this family God's given me?

When my children seek my counsel,

or just need a gentle touch;

Must they beg for my attention

for the love they need so much?

Do I treat their mother respectfully,

with honor and tender loving care;

When I'm tired from working long

hours, have I anything left to share?

Then through the mist of my tears,

I read the Father's Day card in my hand;

"Dear Dad, You're The Greatest"

and, I thank God, I then understand.
